DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT


A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

This International Management project focuses on diversity in teams and how diversity management could enhance team work. It was accomplished in close collaboration with the Zurich based interaction design firm dreipol. The project was tackled with the support of the online course Design Thinking for Business Innovation offered by the University of Virgina and the book Designing for Growth by Jeanne Liedtja and Tim Ogilvie.

THE CHALLENGE

Managing diversity is one of the most important factors for ensuring company competitiveness because interdisciplinary teams foster innovation. The dreipol team consists of qualified interaction designers, visual designers, game designers and software developers. This provides dreipol with a broad expertise and is one of the reasons why the small company continually wins well-known and influential companies or brands as their clients. This success stories also leads to a rapid growth of employee numbers which longs for a more elaborated diversity management system.

 

THE SOLUTION

The Diversity Program consists of two different types of sub-programs. One focuses on the whole company and the other one on the individual project teams.

The program for the project team has three main stages the kick-off, the intensive sessions and the round up. The whole interdepartmental project team is involved. It informs, exchanges and works closely together in order to seek the best possible solution.

The integration program allows new employees to see and experience the whole company in the first weeks. The new employees will work in and get familiar with every department for one day. After these first weeks, other company events are held in order to promote the company spirit and support different disciplines. These events are organized internally and allow every employee no matter what level to share knowledge by means of an informal conference.

Through this program employees from different departments get to know each other and a strong company commitment can be built up. Another advantage is that through working interdepartmentally, a fresh view of a situation can be guaranteed.
